The U-channel Steel Support is a passive support device for coal mine roadways. Made of metal, it is used in deep, complex roadways, roadways in soft coal seams, and tunnels through mountains. It achieves uniform pressure distribution through backfilling, and its retractable design adapts to surrounding rock deformation and reduces peak pressure. The support structure consists of a top beam, column legs, connectors, inter-frame tie rods, and backing material. The top beam is an arc-shaped arch, and the column legs are available in three types: straight wall arch, inward-curved legs, and outward-curved legs. Its technical characteristics include high tensile and compressive strength, good toughness, high support capacity, and multiple uses. It is connected by cable ties to form a retractable structure. It features high cross-sectional utilization and easy installation and maintenance. Combined with backing material filling, it improves load distribution and effectively reduces the incidence of roof falls and rock spalling accidents.

The optimal stress condition for U-shaped steel supports is uniform compression after the backfill has been compacted. When the surrounding rock pressure acting on the U-shaped steel supports reaches a certain value, the supports compress, reducing the surrounding rock pressure on the U-shaped steel supports. This prevents the surrounding rock pressure from exceeding the support’s bearing capacity and causing the supports to fail.
